Art and Copyright and Creative Commons

Today I *will* post some of the insane photos I took Thursday night (it’s taken me this long to edit enough to make a coherent blog post, and more will certainly trickle in later), but right now I have another thingy to address.

I’ve done some thinking about what art really means to me, and mostly that’s really been what it *isn’t*. Here’s some of the things I believe.

Art is not a definite process. It does not have a beginning and it does not have an end.

Art is not an independent process. Being inspired is part of the process and that is at least as much an external thing as it is an internal thing.

Art is not a thing to be withheld, because when it is hidden away, it is given an artificial end, and that lessens the piece by depriving it of one of it’s purposes – to inspire other art.

This is a lot of what Creative Commons is about, because so many of the same tenants, with a few tweaks to wording, are true for information in any form. I’ve always loved Creative Commons, but it was only just recently that I really understood just how amazing and how necessary it is.

As of right now, all of my artwork is available under a Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license.

Attribution, in part because it is obligatory- CC does not offer a license without it, and in part because I like to know where and how my work is being used. However, I will not place limits on the way my work is used. It’s your art, not mine, and as soon as my individual creative process has ended and you have resumed with your own, the control is not mine. I do reserve the rights of my models to control how their image is being used, and if they don’t like it I may have to ask you to remove it from display, but I’ll fight for you and your art to whatever distances I can.

Non-Commercial, I think, is for obvious reasons. I’m not against people making money off of their work, even when their work is a derivative of mine, but I am against the unchecked use of it. Here, I just want you to ask. And I want proof that the “share-alike” portion will be maintained, because once something is being used for profit, there are usually complex legal hoops for anyone who wants to then take and repurpose your piece. It’s sticky, just contact me.

Share-Alike is the most straightforward. I refuse to be the end of the creative process, and if you want to participate in this with me, I want you to continue it further.

The other day, after my friend Luchin looked at the Spring Break post, he told me I’d done something he’d thought impossible – made his friends look mundane.

I suppose if you’re here all of a sudden, like you seem to be, you’re probably really confused. I’ll try to help you out. (Don’t worry, I get lost in the interbutts lots and lots, just remember, always try to ge back to a search engine, and everything will be alright).

I’m autochthonic (I’m not a proper noun; I cuss too much for that). I’m also a dumb teenager with a camera and an addiction to curves adjustment and cross processing. I’m working on branching out.

I really like people, and the things that people create and destroy and live in and leave behind on a very personal individual level. I like the streets and the street lights and the trash cans at the end of your driveway, and you. Photos of nature don’t interest me because they are the default, and photos of cities from a distance do not move me because they are our vicious occupiers, but each individual human has so much power, and the demonstration of that is so unbelieveably fascinating that I can’t not document it.

I have a much less intense, sort of periphery love of color and light, and playing with color and light. It makes things interesting.
